IT outsourcing: what it means and when it pays off for your business.
· 4 min read
In a small or medium business, IT is usually the job of someone who is “good with computers”, until the day the server goes down or an employee opens an infected attachment. IT outsourcing means leaving these things to a specialist company that answers at any hour. Below you will find what IT outsourcing includes, how it differs from an in-house IT hire, what it costs and what the new European cybersecurity rules require.
What IT outsourcing is
IT outsourcing means an IT services company takes over, fully or in part, the work of an IT department: employee support, maintenance of computers and printers, administration of servers and the network, backups, licenses and data security. You pay a monthly subscription and focus on the business.
What it usually includes
- technical support for employees, by phone and over a remote connection;
- on-site visits, for equipment, the network and workstations;
- administration of Windows or Linux servers and Active Directory;
- proactive monitoring of servers and the network, so problems are seen before they stop work;
- verified backups and recovery plans;
- management of licenses and of the software used in the company.
IT outsourcing or an in-house IT hire?
An in-house IT specialist costs a full salary, takes holidays, gets sick and can't know everything alone: servers, networks, security, accounting software. An outsourcing company has a team, 24/7 hours and a response time written into the contract. For businesses with a few dozen computers, the subscription usually costs much less than a full-time position.
What the new cybersecurity rules require
The NIS2 Directive, the European law on the security of networks and information systems, has greatly expanded the number of companies required to manage their cyber risks. In Romania it was transposed by Emergency Ordinance 155/2024, approved by Law 124/2025, and the responsible authority is the National Cyber Security Directorate.
Companies in the covered sectors must register with the DNSC, have risk management measures in place and report significant incidents. The directive requires an early warning within 24 hours of becoming aware of a significant incident. Even if your business isn't covered by NIS2, the rules are a good guide to what well-run IT means: backups, updates, monitoring and a plan for when something goes wrong.
How to choose an IT outsourcing provider
- The response time in the contract — how many minutes until work starts, not just “as soon as possible”.
- The hours — whether support answers at night and on weekends too.
- What the subscription includes — how many computers, how many on-site visits, whether servers are covered.
- Monitoring — whether the provider sees problems before you do.
- The software it knows — for example the accounting and inventory software your company uses.
IT outsourcing at RDN Network Data
With our IT outsourcing service we take over your IT department with 24/7 support, unlimited phone and remote assistance, one on-site visit per month and at most 10 minutes until we start work over a remote connection. The RDN Optim plan costs €25 per month for three computers, and RDN Standard €40 per month for ten, with Windows servers, backup, proactive monitoring and licenses included.
We work with the accounting software used in Romania, such as Saga, Ciel, WinMENTOR, Smartbill or Revisal, and for remote support we use our own app, RDN Remote.
Frequently asked questions about IT outsourcing
What does IT outsourcing mean?
That a specialist company takes over, under contract, IT support, maintenance, server administration and data security, instead of an in-house department.
How much does IT outsourcing cost?
It depends on the number of computers and servers and on what the subscription includes. With us, plans start at €25 per month.
Does my business have to comply with NIS2?
It depends on your sector and the size of your company. The list of sectors and the criteria are in Emergency Ordinance 155/2024, and registration is done with the DNSC.
Do you also come to our office?
Yes. Besides remote support, the subscription includes one on-site visit per month, for equipment, the network and workstations.
In short
IT outsourcing gives you a complete IT team, available 24/7, for a fixed monthly cost. Write to us with how many computers and servers you have and we will suggest the right plan.
