Why choose a VPS: what a VPS server is and when it pays off.

· 7 min read

When your site slows down at busy hours, or when you want to install software that regular hosting won't allow, the answer is almost always the same: a VPS. It is the natural step after shared hosting and, for many businesses, the only server they will ever need. Below you will find, without jargon, what a VPS server is, how it differs from other types of hosting, why to choose a VPS and how to find the right one.

What is a VPS (virtual private server)

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. A powerful physical server is split, through virtualization, into several fully separate virtual machines. Each one behaves like a standalone computer, with its own operating system, users and software, and the processor, RAM and storage allocated to it belong to you alone.

Compared with a physical server, you don't pay for a whole machine. Compared with regular web hosting, you don't share resources with your neighbors: if another customer on the same machine has a high-traffic day, your VPS doesn't feel a thing.

The separation between virtual machines is handled by the hypervisor, the software layer that splits the physical server. The US standards institute NIST describes it, along with security rules for virtualization, in its SP 800-125 guide.

VPS, shared hosting or dedicated server?

All three run on the same kind of servers. What sets them apart is how much of the server is yours:

  • Shared hosting — you share the server with other sites. It is the cheapest option, good for a business website or a blog, but without root access and without software you install yourself.
  • VPS server — you get a guaranteed share of a server, with full root access. It is the balance between price and control, a good fit for online stores, web applications and businesses that run several sites.
  • Dedicated server — the whole physical machine is yours. It pays off for very high traffic, heavy databases or when you need complete isolation, but it costs more. For that we offer dedicated servers.

In short: if shared hosting has become too tight and a dedicated server would be too much, a VPS is the right choice.

Why choose a VPS: 7 reasons

1. Guaranteed resources, consistent speed

On a VPS, the processor cores (vCores) and memory in your plan are reserved for you. Your site responds just as fast at 10 in the morning as at 10 at night, whatever the provider's other customers are doing. For an online store, consistent speed means fewer abandoned carts. It matters in Google too: the official documentation says the Core Web Vitals metrics, which measure how fast and how stably a page loads, are used by its ranking systems.

2. Root access and complete freedom

With root access (administrator, on Windows) you install whatever you need: a specific version of PHP, Node.js or Python, Redis for caching, your own mail server or an application built specifically for your business. Nobody dictates which modules you are allowed to use.

3. Security and isolation

Each VPS is isolated from the others. A breach in another customer's site doesn't reach your data, and you set the firewall rules, the open ports and who can access the server.

4. It grows with your business

You start with a small plan and move to a bigger one as traffic grows, without changing providers and without moving everything from scratch. This matters most for stores with seasonal peaks, such as Black Friday or the winter holidays.

5. Fast SSD and NVMe storage

A modern VPS runs on SSD drives, and for applications that work the database hard, an NVMe VPS is worth it. The difference shows in WordPress and WooCommerce, where every page means dozens of queries.

6. Linux VPS or Windows VPS, your choice

A Linux VPS is the most common option for websites and web applications. You need a Windows VPS when you run software that requires Windows Server: an ERP, accounting software or Active Directory for the office.

7. The power of a server, without the hassle

A VPS costs you a monthly subscription, not the price of a physical machine, and power, cooling, network and spare parts are the provider's job. You only pay for the resources you use.

When you need a VPS

A few signs that it's time to move to a VPS server:

  • your site loads slowly at peak hours, or you get warnings that you have exceeded your account's resources;
  • you run a WooCommerce store with thousands of products, filters and many orders a day;
  • you host several sites, your own or your clients', and want to manage them from one place;
  • you need software or settings that shared hosting doesn't allow;
  • you want a test server, separate from the live site;
  • you run an internal application, a CRM or inventory software that has to be reachable from anywhere.

Managed or unmanaged VPS?

An unmanaged VPS gives you the server and the keys: you install, update and fix. It suits you if someone on your team knows their way around Linux or Windows servers.

A managed VPS leaves the technical side to the provider: system and kernel updates, the firewall, DDoS protection, the web server and the database. You take care of your site and your customers. For businesses without an IT department, the managed option usually costs less than the hours lost on the server.

How to choose a good VPS in Romania

When you compare VPS hosting offers, don't stop at the price. Look at:

  1. Processor and memory — how many vCores and how many GB of RAM you get guaranteed, not “up to”.
  2. Storage — SSD as a must, NVMe for large databases.
  3. Connection — a 1 Gbps uplink and unmetered traffic, so your invoice holds no surprises.
  4. Uptime written into the contract — a guaranteed percentage, not just a promise. We showed what a 99.80% uptime means in minutes per month.
  5. Server location — a VPS in Romania, in a local data center, responds quickly to visitors in the country and keeps your data in the European Union, under GDPR rules, with no transfers outside it.
  6. Backup — whether it is included in the plan and how often it runs.
  7. Support — whether it answers 24/7, in a language you speak, and whether it helps you move your sites.
  8. Control panel — cPanel or VirtualMin, if you don't want to work only from the command line.

VPS from RDN Network Data

Our VPS hosting plans run in our own data center in Romania, on Xeon processors, with SSD drives and NVMe on request. You get 7 to 14 vCores, 8 to 16 GB of RAM, a 1000 Mbps uplink, unmetered traffic, full root access and backup included, from €27.99 per month. The 99.80% uptime is written into the contract, and technical support answers 24/7, in Romanian or English.

If you are coming from another provider, we move your sites, databases and mailboxes for free. We move online stores through WordPress and WooCommerce migration, with no lost orders. And if you don't want to deal with the server, we manage it for you.

Frequently asked questions about VPS

What does VPS mean?

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server: a virtual machine with its own resources, created on a physical server that is split into several machines isolated from one another.

How much does a VPS cost?

The price depends on processor, memory and storage. With us, a VPS starts at €27.99 per month, with 7 vCores, 8 GB of RAM and 150 GB of SSD, and the larger plans go up to 14 vCores, 16 GB of RAM and 1.1 TB of storage.

Is a VPS faster than shared hosting?

As a rule, yes, because the resources are not shared. Your site always has the plan's processor and memory available, so its speed no longer depends on other sites' traffic.

Can I move my site from shared hosting to a VPS?

Yes. Moving means copying the files, the database and the email, followed by a DNS change. For our customers it is free, and our technicians do it.

Do I need technical knowledge for a VPS?

No, if you choose a managed VPS or a panel such as cPanel. You still get root access, so you can take full control of the server at any time.

In short

A VPS gives you the speed, security and freedom of your own server at a price close to regular hosting. If your site or store has outgrown the limits of shared hosting, it is the best next step. Write to us about what you run today and we will recommend the right VPS plan, without paying for resources you don't use.
